A 35-year-old man accused of breaking into a Town of Grafton house where he used to live on Memorial Day, threatening a man with a sledgehammer and stealing a bathroom mirror because he thought it was a camera set up to spy on him was charged this week in Ozaukee County Circuit Court with armed burglary.

Eugene U. Dubord, now a Sparta resident, is also charged with stealing a vehicle, criminal trespassing with the use of a dangerous weapon and two counts of criminal damage to property.

On Tuesday, Judge Paul Malloy set bail for Dubord at $100,000 and ordered him not to have contact with the Town of Grafton house or any of the victims in the case.

According to the criminal complaint, the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office received several 911 calls on Monday, May 30, from people reporting that a man wielding a hammer broke into a house on Hillcrest Road and threatened a person there.

When deputies arrived, a neighbor told them he heard loud banging, then saw a man with a hammer enter the house.

The owner of the home, who rents her second-story rooms to multiple tenants, said she was in the basement doing laundry when she heard “loud booms” coming from the front of the house, then footsteps, the complaint states.

Suspecting someone had broken into her house, the woman ran outside. From there, she said, she saw Dubord, one of her former tenants, leave her house, get into a Ford utility pickup truck and speed away, hitting a parked vehicle and getting stuck in mud briefly before driving off, according to the complaint.

A man who rents a room in the house said he was in bed when he was startled by loud banging on the front door, then heard someone walking quickly up the stairs.

He said the door to his room flew open and Dubord, who was holding a short sledgehammer, was standing there, the complaint states.

The man, who said he and Dubord used to live together at the house, told authorities that Dubord approached him while he was lying in bed, raised the hammer over him and said, “Let’s go outside,” the complaint states.

As the man attempted to dial 911, Dubord tried unsuccessfully to take his phone, then said to him, “Let’s go outside. I am going to kill you,” according to the complaint.

The man said that as he was attempting again to call 911, Dubord went into the bathroom, then left the house. When the man checked the bathroom, he saw that a mirror was missing.

The man said that Dubord doesn’t like him because he believes he is a government agent whose mission is to spy on Dubord. He also said that Dubord believes cameras have been hidden in mirrors in the house to track him, according to the complaint.

Police stopped and arrested Dubord a short time later in Mequon. In the truck he was driving, which was reported stolen in La Crosse County, officers found a sledgehammer and mirror.

As Dubord was being taken to jail, he told a deputy he wanted to retrieve his phone from the truck because it “had information about why I did this” and that he didn’t intend to hurt the man he threatened with the hammer but rather just wanted to have a conversation with him.

Then, the deputy said, Dubord began making bizarre comments as if he were speaking with someone who wasn’t there. When the deputy asked if he was OK, Dubord snapped out of it and said he was fine, the complaint states.
