Theft of motor vehicle, trespassing: Barrett Road & West Fifth Street

A 2022 Jeep Compass was stolen between 11 p.m. Aug. 3 and 3 a.m. Aug. 4 from a driveway on Barrett.

The victim had left the Jeep’s key fob inside the vehicle. It’s unknown whether the Jeep had been locked.

Police, using the Jeep’s GPS, traced the stolen vehicle to an address on West 149th Street in Cleveland. The key fob and rearview mirror were missing from the vehicle. At about 8 a.m., they returned to stolen Jeep to the victim.

Later that day, police learned of another attempted vehicle theft on West Fifth. Home security video showed that at about 3:15 a.m. Aug. 4, the stolen Jeep Compass and another vehicle arrived on West Fifth and parked in front of a home.

Two people stepped out of the Jeep and the other vehicle and walked toward a Toyota Tundra and a Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 sport-utility vehicle parked in the driveway. They tried opening the Toyota and the Mercedes-Benz but the doors were locked. The two people returned to the vehicles in which they arrived and drove away.

Theft of motor vehicle: Stone Ridge Way

A 2018 Toyota Highlander sport-utility vehicle was stolen between 11 p.m. Aug. 3 and 6 a.m. Aug. 4 from a garage on Stone Ridge.

The victim said she had closed and locked the garage door. However, when her husband arrived home the next morning, the garage door was open and the Highlander was gone.

It’s unknown whether the vehicle had been locked. The garage door was not noticeably damaged.

Theft from vehicle: Slippery Rock Lane

A credit card was stolen between 11 p.m. Aug. 3 and 6:30 a.m. Aug. 4 from a vehicle parked outside a home on Slippery Rock.

It’s unknown whether the vehicle had been locked. The victim found the driver’s-side door partly open the morning of Aug. 4.

Someone tried to use the credit card at a gas station on Carnegie Avenue in Cleveland. However, the card was declined because the victim had previously locked the account.

Personal injury: West Bagley Road

A North Ridgeville man, 60, accidentally shot himself in the hand at about 4 p.m. Aug. 4 at Select Fire Training Center, 1267 West Bagley.

The man said he was practice firing his handgun when the hammer failed to lock. When he tried to unload the handgun, it fired.

The man immediately reported the incident to a range officer and called a family member, who drove him Southwest General Health Center in Middleburg Heights.

When police asked the man why he didn’t call an ambulance, the man said he was a nurse and provided self-care to his wound during the ride to the hospital.

Criminal mischief, littering: Stonesthrow Drive

A Stonesthrow family called police at about 2:15 a.m. Aug. 10 and said a group of about 10 teenagers had just jumped out of a van and toilet-papered their home.

When police arrived, they saw toilet paper covering the house and trees in the yard. Flour and ranch dressing were spilled in the driveway. Hot dogs and cheese were in the yard and driveway and on the house.

One of the family members knew and identified three of the teenagers. Police reached two of them. Their families said that one of the family members on Stonesthrow had previously toilet-papered their homes, indicating that Aug. 10 incident was in retaliation.

Operating a vehicle under the influence: West Bagley Road

An Olmsted Falls man, 46, was arrested at about 6 p.m. Aug. 4 after his car rear-ended another vehicle on West Bagley at Front Street.

The man’s four grandchildren were with him in the car. His eyes were glassy and red. He seemed under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The man failed field sobriety tests. Police later found an unopen can of beer in his car. The man’s wife picked up the grandchildren.
