With the important caveat that the future belongs to self-driving cars which won't need side mirrors, Elon Musk confirmed that one sunny day Tesla cars will be able to automatically configure them for new drivers without human input. So far, the side mirrors of Tesla's electric vehicles can automatically fold, dim, or tilt when needed, and the folding feature can also be set for various locations.

When a new driver enters, however, would "Teslas ever be able to automatically adjust the side mirror settings based on 3D position of the driver’s eyes plus comparing against the fleet’s internal camera data and side mirror settings," asked James Stephenson, a Tesla driver, on Twitter. The omnipresent on the platform Elon Musk, who at one point wanted to buy it, immediately swooped in with a tweet that Tesla would indeed "add autoconfigure to side mirrors," even though they could soon become redundant since cars will drive themselves.

While we are waiting for that bright future, Tesla is working towards ditching side mirrors altogether. On its upcoming electric Cybertruck pickup, for instance, "side mirrors cause ~5% range reduction at highway speed," he added, justifying Tesla's decision to add them to the sales package just to satisfy the current rules and regulations in the US. "They’re required by law, but designed to be easy to remove by owners," quipped Musk back in October, and it seems that this will be the direction Tesla will be heading to with its future vehicles.
