It seems that Superman's newest sidekick is mirroring the hero's infamous origin story with a slight alteration. A preview for Batman/Superman: World's Finest #7 gives fans a first look at the eerily familiar beginning of Boy Thunder.

Superman's classic origin is a tale as old as comic books themselves. In the final days of Krypton, scientist Jor-El knew that his planet's days were numbered, and he ensured that no matter what happened, his infant son would live on. After placing baby Kal-El a rocket, Jor-El and his wife Lara bid their child goodbye, and sent the future Superman to Earth. After being found on the side of the road in a small Kansas town by the benevolent Jonathan and Martha Kent, the child was taken in and raised as one of their own. This would be just the first steps for Clark to becoming the hero he was meant to be.

And it seems that the Man of Steel's history is repeating itself with a slight twist in the form of a new hero. In a preview for Batman/Superman: World's Finest #7 by Mark Waid and Dan Mora, devastation has come to Gotham, or at least an alternate reality version of it. Two scientists scramble to place their son in a capsule and bid him a tearful goodbye. As the boy disappears out of sight, he witnesses the planet he called home explode before his very eyes. The ship makes quite the noticeable arrival on Prime Earth, and forces Batman, Superman and Robin to intervene. The trio meets the scared youth inside the craft, who introduces himself as David Sikela. Sikela mentions his parents' work involved the study of parallel worlds and that his strange vessel was meant to their test theories on hypertime.

Fans of All-Star Superman may recognize the text accompanying David's introduction as the same one that recapped Superman's origin in All-Star Superman #1. This makes sense considering how similar David and Clark's journey to Earth were. The only real difference is that Sikela wasn't found by a kindly couple, but instead by the World's Finest. Despite how much David Sikela's origin mirrors Clark's, what could this one alteration of Superman's origin mean for Boy Thunder?

Superman’s made it quite clear in the past about the positive influence Ma and Pa Kent had on him as a young lad. Other universes have even shown that without Superman’s parents, the hero might have veered down a much darker direction. That’s not to say that Clark wouldn’t be a fine substitute father-figure. After all, he raised Jon Kent to become the stand-up hero he is today. But David isn't Clark, and coming to a different universe that mirrors one's home is a far sight from traveling to another planet. While the origins of Boy Thunder may resemble Clark's, the hero is certainly sure to encounter some other major differences between him and his new sidekick. Batman/Superman: World's Finest #7 will release on September 20th.
