Maruti Suzuki has just launched the S-CNG version of its popular Swift hatchback in two trim levels -- VXi, which is priced at Rs 7.77 lakh, and ZXi, which is priced at Rs 8.45 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Swift becomes Maruti Suzuki's ninth model (seventh if we consider models available to private buyers) to be offered with a CNG kit installed from the factory. Barring the CNG kit itself, there are no cosmetic or features updates that have been made to the Swift. Maruti is also offering the Swift S-CNG via its subscription service for an all-inclusive fee of Rs 16,499 per month.
With the installation of the S-CNG kit, the Swift now gets two interdependent Electronic Control Units (ECU) designed to optimise its running on CNG as well as petrol. Maruti uses stainless steel pipes and joints in the factory-fitted kit to prevent any corrosion, while integrating the wire harnesses with the rest of the wiring system to prevent any short-circuiting.
The engine is the same 1.2-litre, K Series naturally-aspirated unit as in the standard car, which makes 90 hp and 113 Nm when running on petrol, though when using CNG, the figures drop to 77 hp and 98.5 Nm. This engine is only available with a five-speed manual gearbox in the CNG version. Maruti also claims that on CNG, the Swift can return 30.90 km / kg (verified by JATO).
Seeing as there are no changes to the features list, the VXi trim gets 14-inch steel wheels with covers, manual air conditioning, an coloured multi-information display (MID), power steering with tilt adjust, remote central locking, speed sensing door lock, a manual day-night inside rear view mirror, an audio system with USB, AUX and Bluetooth connectivity and four speakers and electrically adjustable ORVMs. The ZXi trim further adds 15-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps, leather wrapped steering, keyless entry and go, a 7.0-inch touchscreen SmartPlay Studio infotainment with a navigation system and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay connectivity, auto climate control, and power-folding wing mirrors.
