Auto folding mirrors no longer available on Skoda Kushaq & Volkswagen Taigun: Here's why

Skoda and Volkswagen have removed auto-folding outside rearview mirrors from Kushaq and Taigun. This has been done for all the variants. So, even if you opt for the top-spec variant, you will have to manually fold the outside rearview mirrors. The reason behind this is the global shortage of semiconductors as Zac Hollis, Director of Sales, Service, and Marketing of Skoda Auto India confirmed.

Zac shared the reason for the removal of auto-folding mirrors when a Twitter user asked him about it. Zac also said that he hopes that the supply issue soon gets resolved. So, it seems like Skoda could re-introduce the feature in the future. However, this information is not yet confirmed.

Because of this Skoda and Volkswagen have also updated the brochures of the Kushaq and Taigun. The old brochure has also been removed from the website.  Earlier, this feature was reserved for the higher variants but now it has been omitted completely.

Kushaq and Tiagun share quite a bit of parts with each other. This helps the manufacturers in saving manufacturing costs. Both SUVs are based on the MQB-A0-IN platform because of which the wheelbase of both SUVs is 2,651 mm.

Moreover, the engine and gearbox are also shared between both the SUVs. There are two turbocharged petrol engines on offer. There is a 1.0-litre TSI and a 1.5-litre TSI. The 1.0 TSI produces 113 bhp of max power and 178 Nm of peak torque. It is offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

Then we have the 1.5 TSI that produces 148 bhp of max power and 250 Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. This engine also comes with ACT or Active Cylinder Technology. So, two of the engine cylinders can shut down under less load. This helps in saving fuel.

Skoda is now working on a new mid-size sedan that will be positioned higher than the now-discontinued Rapid. It will be called Slavia and will be competing against the Honda City, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Hyundai Verna. Zac Hollis has confirmed that the deliveries of the Slavia will start in early March.

It will also share its underpinnings with the Kushaq and Taigun. So, it will be based on the same MQB-A0-IN platform. It is 4,541 mm long, 1,752 mm wide and 1,487 mm tall. The engines will also be the same as the Kushaq. So, there will be a 1.0 TSI and a 1.5 TSI.

Volkswagen is also working on a mid-size sedan which will replace the Vento in their line-up. It is expected to be called Virtus. It will derive a lot of its parts from the Slavia. Both will be based on the same platform and will use the same engine and gearboxes. Volkswagen will be launching the Virtus in April of 2022 with the unveiling might happen in February 2022.
