A Bellwood man faces theft and related charges after he allegedly was paid $200 to fix a car and never returned it.

Jeffery E. Sprankle, 64, was arraigned Wednesday morning by Magisterial District Judge Fred B. Miller on felony charges of theft and receiving stolen property and a misdemeanor charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Unable to post $15,000 bail, he was remanded to the Blair County Prison. His preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 2 in front of Miller.

According to court documents, the victim gave Sprankle $200 on May 21 to replace the muffler on a 2002 silver Toyota Corolla. The victim told police Sprankle said it would be done in a few days, but after several weeks, he had not heard from Sprankle, could not find him and could not find his car.

On July 17, the victim said Sprankle showed up in his backyard and said he needed a ride to Tyrone and would then give the car back. The victim took Sprankle to a home in Grazierville to retrieve the car, and Sprankle was to return to his residence with the car. The victim went to Sprankle’s residence, but Sprankle never showed up, according to the police report.

Police talked to Sprankle on July 21 and he told officers he didn’t know anything about a silver Toyota Corolla or agreeing to fix the car. He also told police he didn’t know the victim.

A search on the vehicle’s VIN number showed that it was found abandoned at Smith Transport in Tyrone on July 12 and towed away.
