We’ve all seen images of reconstituted muscle cars and most are either bad photoshops or funhouse mirror versions of a hallowed classic marque. Trans Am Worldwide has defied the aforementioned complaint and has fielded some cool Camaro-based Trans Ams over the last few years, including the Bandit Trans Am and the 455 Super Duty T/A. This author, for one, thinks they are great-looking cars and built to meticulous standards.
Now, they are offering a Camaro-based, Chevrolet 70/SS minus any collaboration with General Motors. Trans Am Worldwide has nailed down the look and leverages all the goodness of the sixth-gen Camaro as well.
The 70/SS’ extensive re-worked body is fairly successful. The shape and scale of the original car are pretty much spot on, even though the details, while faithful to the original, share nothing with a Chevy Chevelle from 1970. The grille and quad headlights look good and the body sculpting is spot on.
What this means is you get a retro Chevelle with monster power and a chassis that would humiliate anything from Detroit in the seventies. The 70/SS is equipped with an LS6/X twin-turbo 454 with 1,500 horsepower, a manual transmission, and oodles of retro styling design cues.
Inside the cabin, it’s all modern Camaro, (and a C7 steering wheel) and that ain’t exactly a bad thing. All modern accouterments are present and accounted for. The interior also adds a retro gauge cluster, loop carpet, ’70 style seats, console, and shifter. The convertible body style cures the Camaro’s lingering blind spot issue and the new front clip gives you a long hood with visible corners, a rare luxury these days.
Seven years in the making, the 70/SS is a nice addition to Worldwide Trans Am’s offerings. Choose from eight heritage colors or ten different modern metallic and pearl combinations, or have their paint department mix your favorite or custom color. Other options include a removable hard-top, upgraded brake package, multiple wheel options, painted graphics, and exposed carbon fiber trim.
If this all sounds good, be ready to cough up $150K. Retro cool ain’t cheap and the labor just to convert the body to a 70/SS was probably extensive. If all this sounds ho-hum, a fairly well-optioned Camaro 2SS is available for around $40,000, just sayin’. Go here for more info and details.
