Recently, Tesla Cybertruck was found with side mirrors in the wild. After the sighting, Elon Musk pointed out that Cybertruck owners can easily remove the rearview mirror as needed.

Since the appearance of electric pickup trucks, Cybertruck's rearview mirrors have been a hot topic. Many people like electric pickups without mirrors. For a while, the community wondered if Tesla would launch a Cybertruck without a rearview mirror. However, it seems that specific questions have been answered.

"They are required by law, but they are designed to facilitate disassembly by car owners," Elon Musk said of Cybertruck's side-view mirrors.

They are required by law, but are designed to be easily removed by the owner

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111, titled "Rear Visibility," requires side-view mirrors. The regulation requires all vehicles to be equipped with rear-view mirrors so that the driver can see objects on the side and behind the car clearly and without obstacles.

In October 2019, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) turned to the public to discuss camera-based rear-view systems or "camera monitoring systems (CMS) as an alternative to rear-view mirrors." The NHTSA and the Department of Transportation submitted an advance notice (ANPRM) of the proposed rulemaking to the Federal Register.

NHTSA pointed out that after the two automakers submitted their rulemaking petitions to the agency, it sought public comment, asking for permission to install CMS instead of external rearview mirrors on light vehicles and heavy trucks. The agency listed some concerns about the petition, especially regarding the safety implications of replacing rearview mirrors with CMS.

Public comments on ANPRM were closed in December 2019. Teslarati found no evidence that NHTSA approved the rulemaking petition seeking permission to replace rearview mirrors with CMS. Therefore, Tesla must abide by the currently enacted law, the Cybertruck with side-view mirrors.
