The Bottom Line: What is a CX-9? The Mazda CX-9 is one of the more distinctive 3 row midsize SUVs, prioritizing style and driving experience. It also comes closest to the luxury brands, with its impressive cabin materials and sharp looking design features.

The 2022 Mazda CX-9 ranks at the top of the competitive midsize SUV class, thanks in part to its quality interior, punchy fuel efficient engine, and polished ride and handling.

This 3 row midsize SUV class has 10 direct competitors, with names we all know.

They are: the Kia Telluride, Subaru Ascent, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Toyota Highlander, Chevy Traverse, Ford Explorer, GMC Acadia, Volkswagen Atlas, and Jeep Grand Cherokee L. You have got to be good to stand out in this 3 row midsize class, and the Mazda CX-9 has the style, options, price and performance to be a top line contender.

This week Mazda sent me a 2022 CX-9 Signature Edition AWD SUV to test drive and review. The base window sticker price for this model starts at $47,210. The only option on the test SUV is: the snowflake pearl paint for $395. The MSRP manufactures suggest retail price, including the $1,225 delivery fee, is: $48,830.

After adding in the state and local sales tax, plus the DMV and dealer fees, the total purchase price came to: $54,934. As this is a $55K SUV the ride, handling, tech and safety systems have to be top notch for this price, and the CX-9 has all the right qualifications to be a best buy in this midsize class.

The Mazda CX-9 is a nice blend of a crossover, SUV, minivan and a station wagon. It has all the basic ingredients for a fun to drive, easy to live with, safe and comfortable vehicle with a Swiss army knife attitude to be all it can be. Six passenger seating, check, huge flat load floor with the seats pulled out, check, a two toned leather interior with power everything, check.

The standard features in the Signature Edition CX-9 are over 70 lines long on the window sticker. This is a great SUV for the price, plus Consumer Reports rates the 2022 Mazda CX-9 as a best overall buy, in the 3 row midsize SUV category.

First it starts with Mazda’s Skyactiv 2.5L liter 4 cylinder turbo engine with 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. That’s bolted to a 6 speed Skyactiv sport mode automatic transmission with paddle shifters, and feeds power into the I-Activ AWD all wheel drive driveline, for maximum traction and driving safety.

Interior luxury options include: Nappa leather seating, power drivers seat with lumbar and memory control, power passenger seat, heated and ventilated front seats, 2nd row heated seats, heated leather wrapped steering wheel, and 3 zone automatic climate control.

Exterior Signature Edition features start with a set of 20″ alloy wheels, rain sensing windshield wipers, windshield wiper de-icer, heated power side mirrors with turn lamps, power auto folding side mirrors, hands free power rear liftgate, and rear privacy glass.

Tech and security highlights are: an anti-theft engine immobilizer, blind spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, g-vectoring control plus, lane departure warning system, rear cross traffic alert, LED headlights with auto on and off, LED fog and daytime running lights, automatic high beam control, adaptive front end lighting, and a LED lighted Signature grill.

The list of upgraded features continues with a 10.25″ color center stack display screen, Mazda driving navigation with traffic sign recognition, driver attention alert, a Bose AM/FM/HD premium sound system with 12 speakers, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a wireless phone charging pad, auto dimming rear view mirror, Mazda advanced keyless entry, and a set of 2nd row window shades.

Finally, this Signature Edition CX-9 comes with dynamic stability control, a full traction control system, trailer stability control, advanced dual front air bags, front side impact air bags, side curtain air bags, advanced smart braking support, advanced city braking support, Mazda radar cruise control, and a 360 degree view monitoring camera system.

This CX-9 knows more about how your driving than you do, and is ready to make your daily commute the safest, smoothest, and most comfortable ride every day.
